Founded in 1808, during the Napoleonic period, it is still the largest institute of musical education in Italy. It is housed in Milan, within the church of Santa Maria della Passione. Among its most famous students there are Pietro Mascagni, Giacomo Puccini and, in most recent times, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti.
